Hello, my name is Jeremiah Keith Jackson, I am 24 years old, and I am currently a graduate student at the University of Findlay studying Professional Communication. I am also a former American football player at the University of Findlay where I played football for six years. I graduated with my undergraduate degree in Business Management in the spring of 2023, and will be completing my Masters in Professional Communication in the winter of 2025.

Through college I struggled finding my career path. But with trying new things, joining abroad programs through my school such as Maximo Nivel, I rekindled a childhood passion through exploration.

What ultimately led me to Maximo Nivel was my interest in traveling abroad, and my desire to teach English abroad. Ever since I was a child I’ve held on to this dream of traveling the world. To be able to experience different cultures and learn new values I could apply to my own life.

Through the University of Findlay, I have been able to make that dream a reality by traveling to a number of countries. So, when I was approached with the opportunity to come to Guatemala to teach English through Maximo Nivel, I knew that was something I wanted to be involved with.

Volunteering with Maximo Nivel in Guatemala

Going into this experience I wanted to come in with no expectations. I did this because I don’t like to compare my experiences abroad to one another because that can take away from the experience itself. And this was going to be my first time teaching English abroad.

From my experiences in Costa Rica, I somewhat understood the landscape of Central America and how vibrant the natural landscape was with its mountains, volcanoes, rainforest, and wildlife. So, I came in seeking to enjoy the nature aspect of things.

In terms of the program itself I’ve taught here in America through subbing for grades K-12, and teaching speech classes at the University of Findlay. But I had no idea how teaching English in Guatemala was going to be.

From the start I appreciated the beauty of Guatemala. From staying in the city of Antigua, loving the compactness of the city, being surrounded by beautiful volcanoes, the architecture and experiencing the vast marketplace, it was incredible.

Ziplining for the first time at Lake Atitlan, and seeing the massive, marvelous lake was seeing such an amazing experience! Two other amazing experiences were going to the Cerro de La Cruz (Hill of the Cross), and the Pacaya Volcano Hike. The Cerro de La Cruz gave a beautiful view of the city of Antigua and served as a reassurance of my faith due to the story behind the journey. There was an uncertainty of our group making it there because of limited time, but we found a way.

Jeremiah-Volunteer-Teaching-English-Guatemala

And the volcano hike served as an eye-opening experience of the wonders of this world, and God’s creation. To be able to hike and see a volcano up close, including the peak, even roasting marshmallows in steam holes around the volcanoes was such a fantastic experience.
But the most transformative moment/experience for me was interacting with the kids at the public school where I taught English. I really loved how I was embraced by the kids, the other teachers, and truly the entire community!

The kids were so excited to see me every morning and were interactive during our lessons. My favorite moments came seeing the growth and development of the kids with their English over the course of the week and playing soccer with them at recess.

As I mentioned before I played football for six years and would call myself really athletic. But these kids made me look like a fool playing soccer with them because of how talented they were.

I see educating as an act of service and teaching the kids English for that week made me realize the impact one can have on someone through service. Not knowing the impact I was truly having on the kids in that moment, but to see them show their appreciation and gratitude was really heartwarming.

Discovering Guatemalan Culture

One of the things I was really excited about was immersing myself into Guatemalan culture. From learning about Mayan culture to learning how to salsa dance, I gained a rich perspective on my experience.

I studied some Spanish before I came to Guatemala; therefore, I was able to hold conversations using my basic knowledge. But what I found was after a couple of days of immersing myself in the culture I was able to expedite my Spanish knowledge. I was able to hold more complex conversations and use my new knowledge to navigate around the city of Antigua. And that allowed me to buy food and other things from stores, interact and meet new people.

Jeremiah-Volunteer-Guatemala-Teaching-Kids

One thing that stood out to me was the experience of the Mayan Culture. Cooking a meal from Guatemalan culture and seeing first-hand how they hand-make the attire that represent their culture was an amazing experience to me. Even more so because I now understand how difficult and time consuming it can be to create some such things.

Something that I really enjoyed was also the salsa dance class. I admit I am not a dancer, but I found myself in an all-out sweat, because I had such a great time during the salsa class. Trying out the moves the instructor showed us, having a great time alongside everyone else, it was such a blast!

And I can’t forget the market tour which opened my eyes to a different way of making a living. I learned how families rely on people buying their food or fruits, clothes, and jewelry that they would sell on the market to support their families. And that is something I am foreign to here in America.

The market in Antigua literally had everything. I needed to buy some soap, I went to the market; Wanted some candy, the market; Wanted to buy a Real Madrid jersey; market. I felt hungry, literally the market. The market had everything I could want and need. I liken the market to our malls in America, but just more outdoors with many, many tents.

Challenges and Successes While Volunteering Abroad

I will not act like things were perfect on my trip. Every trip has its ups and downs.

On my first day of teaching, I was thrown into the fire. Of course I have teaching experience, but I have never taught English as a second language to foreigners before. So, the first couple of lessons I taught were rough.

But how interactive the kids were with my lessons gave me the confidence to keep going. Their eagerness to learn English, and how excited they were to see me kept me going early on.

Something else I experienced was the cultural shock. With cultural immersion, cultural shock naturally comes. I am not the fondest of Latin cuisine but coming in with an open mind I found that there’s a ton of Latin foods that I really enjoy.

Lessons Learned from Volunteering in Guatemala

This trip teaching English in Guatemala with Maximo Nivel instilled a ton of confidence in me. I was unsure about how teaching English would go for me because it’s something I’ve never done before. But to see myself shine with my personality, and the ability to educate the kids, leaning on my experiences of teaching. This allowed me to exude confidence at a level I didn’t know I possessed.

Also, I have learned to express my gratitude to others through my various interactions on my trip. With interacting with the students, the Maximo Nivel employees, and from the people of Guatemala. I learned how important it is to express my gratitude to others. Because culturally in Guatemala people had no problem expressing their gratitude to me. And their words truly made me feel good to my core.

I am a firm believer that you should give people their flowers while they are still able to smell them.

Tips for Future Volunteers

A couple tips or wisdom I could share is to first practice your Spanish before going to a Spanish speaking country. You will naturally improve your Spanish being immersed in the culture and there will be times where you must speak Spanish. So, practicing prior to coming on your trip will allow you to communicate more with Spanish speakers.

Another is to be open-minded and that is understanding the differences and trying new things. It is best to be open-minded, because you don’t want to come off as disrespectful, and you could learn something new.

I would also say to have patience. With experiencing cultural differences, you need to have patience. With the language when interacting, understanding not all cultures prioritize time the same way. And understanding what you can see as disrespectful is a kind gesture in different cultures.

But most important I would say to be present in the moment. Know that you are being given the opportunity to experience something completely different than what you are accustomed to. Be present and recognize the differences around you.

What can you take from this experience, and how can this moment help you improve as a person? What are you experiencing that you do or do not like? What can you do to change that? How does each moment make you feel? What are you now inspired to do? What new values or skills can you take back home, and how can you apply those? How can you make an impact with this experience?

These are all the questions I asked myself through the course of my days seeing how different the educational system was in Guatemala. Seeing how these kids are not afforded the same opportunities for education as I am back in America. And that is because of their circumstances with finances, or the education system in Guatemala not being significant.

Jeremiah-maximo-city-tour-antigua

I thought about how blessed I was. But I also saw how much they enjoyed their daily lives. I observed how people were able to have fun with what they have, not worrying about the things they do not have. Being present in the moment led to me realizing what’s really important in life. Taking values and skills, I learned through my interactions and observations and applying them to my own life.

Do I Recommend Volunteering with Maximo Nivel?

My overall impression of Maximo Nivel was amazing. The employees made me feel welcomed and assisted me with teaching, creating lesson plans, navigating around the city of Antigua and more.

Also teaching me about Guatemalan culture, which was very crucial to my experience. I am thankful to Maximo Nivel for the events and activities they held. There was always something to be involved in. Someone would find it extremely hard not to feel at home with Maximo Nivel.

I’ve always had a soft spot for animals. Growing up, my house was full of life—three dogs, chickens clucking in the yard, the occasional parakeet, and a curious cat who ruled them all. I knew from a young age that I wanted to work with animals in some way. While becoming a veterinarian didn’t end up being in the cards, I still hoped to find a way to be around animals—and to make a difference.

At the same time, I’d been wanting to improve my Spanish. I’d taken some classes in the past, but I knew that immersion was the only way to really make it stick. That’s when I stumbled upon Maximo Nivel’s programs in Costa Rica. The combination of Spanish classes and animal care volunteering sounded almost too perfect. When I saw there was a volunteer placement at a local dog and cat shelter, I clicked “apply now” without thinking twice.

Volunteer-and-Learn-Spanish-in-Costa-Rica-with-Maximo-Nivel

From the moment I landed in Costa Rica, I felt both excitement and nervous anticipation. The tropical warmth hit me first, followed quickly by the friendly smile of a Maximo Nivel staff member who greeted me at the airport holding a large yellow smiley flag. They drove me to the institute in San José, where I received a detailed orientation. I appreciated how practical and helpful it was—everything from cultural customs to how to navigate public transportation and where to eat. It made me feel supported and at ease from day one.

Soon after, I was welcomed into the home of my host family. I was nervous about the language barrier, but they greeted me with open arms—and a plate of the most delicious homemade gallo pinto I’ve ever tasted. At first, our dinner conversations were a challenge. I’d catch a few words here and there, nod, and smile a lot. But every day, my understanding grew. As I started picking up more vocabulary and grammar in my Spanish classes at Maximo Nivel, I could actually start talking back—and not just with simple phrases. We’d laugh, swap stories, and sometimes talk late into the evening. Those shared meals became the heart of my experience.

volunteering-while-learning-Spanish-in-Costa-Rica

Each morning, I volunteered at a local dog and cat shelter. The first time I walked in, I was met by wagging tails, curious eyes, and the unmistakable smell of a space filled with love and a little bit of chaos. My tasks ranged from bathing and brushing the dogs to feeding the cats, assisting with deworming and vaccination days, and keeping the shelter clean and organized. I didn’t perform the medical treatments myself, but I helped manage the flow of people and animals, kept pets calm during the process, and supported wherever I was needed.

There was one dog I’ll never forget, Nacho, a senior lab with wise eyes and a gentle soul. Every day, he’d be waiting for me, tail wagging just slightly. He’d shadow me around the shelter, lie next to me during lunch, and offer a quiet kind of companionship that I didn’t realize I needed. We connected in a way that words—or even Spanish—couldn’t express.

In the afternoons, I headed to Maximo Nivel for two hours of Spanish classes. The immersive format was incredibly effective. My teacher tailored every lesson to our pace and needs, and I felt completely supported as I worked through new grammar, vocabulary, and conversation skills. We often built lessons around what I’d experienced that morning at the shelter or around things I wanted to be able to say to my host family. Learning Spanish this way—practicing in the real world and refining it in class—made everything come together so naturally.

Spanish-Classes-for-volunteers-in-Costa-Rica

Outside of volunteering and class, I took time to explore San José and the surrounding areas. I practiced Spanish everywhere I went—from ordering empanadas at the feria to chatting with uber drivers. Every small interaction helped me grow more confident. The mix of language, culture, and community made every day feel meaningful and full.

Leaving Costa Rica was surprisingly hard. I didn’t expect to form such deep connections in such a short time—not just with the animals, but with my host family, other volunteers and students at Maximo, and the country itself. I came for Spanish and volunteering, and I left with so much more: a deeper appreciation for Costa Rican culture, a boost in confidence, and a heart full of gratitude.

practice-spanish-while-volunteering-in-costa-rica

This experience reminded me that you don’t have to wait for the “perfect time” or a specific reason to travel, volunteer, or learn something new. Sometimes, you just have to say yes. Volunteering while learning Spanish in Costa Rica turned out to be one of the most enriching and heartwarming experiences of my life—and I know I’ll carry it with me wherever I go next.

Chichicastenango Market: A 500-Year-Old Mayan Experience in Guatemala https://maximonivel.com/chichicastenango-market-guide/ Thu, 03 Apr 2025 12:51:50 +0000 https://maximonivel.com/?p=18971

I joined Maximo Nivel to study some Spanish and also travel to Guatemala. My Spanish was minimal, and I had no idea where to start. I saw the option of a “Mini Adventure” as an add-on to my program. After asking my program advisor about it, it immediately piqued my interest. I ended up traveling to Tikal, Lake Atitlán, and Pacaya Volcano. I even did a street food tour, but for me, the highlight was Chichicastenango.

visiting-Chichicastenango-Market

The 500-year-old Mayan Market of Chichicastenango, affectionately nicknamed “Chichi Market,” was one of my most cherished stops in Guatemala. Located in the Quiché department in the western highlands of Guatemala, this picturesque town sits at an altitude of over 2,000 meters (6,500 feet) and is surrounded by lush mountains. It’s not just the stunning landscape that draws visitors here—the Chichicastenango Market is considered one of the largest and most traditional indigenous markets in all of Latin America.

Open only on Thursdays and Sundays, this market is a timeless journey into the essence of Maya culture, where every corner unveils textures and stories woven into daily life. People from nearby villages hike in for hours, sometimes days, to sell their handmade crafts, textiles, produce, flowers, and ceremonial items. Chichicastenango is also a center for traditional K’iche’ Maya spirituality, making the entire experience feel deeply connected to the region’s roots.

Located about a two-hour drive from Antigua, Guatemala, public transportation is available to reach this small town in Guatemala’s highlands. Though the ride involves winding mountain roads, the views are breathtaking and well worth the journey.

Chichicastenango-Market-textiles

Chichicastenango Market is more than just a marketplace; it’s a vibrant cultural hub where centuries-old traditions come alive. The journey to get there is as much a part of the experience as the market itself. We saw glimpses of natural landscapes and could experience the life of a local on our way to the market. The mini-adventure included both our entry tickets into the market as well as a bilingual guide. The guide was very friendly and helpful in communicating and providing insight into the cultural significance of the site.

The colorful stalls of handmade textiles and the smell of incense and food immediately catch your attention when you arrive. Within the market, you’ll see intricate designs and vibrant colors of the huipiles, rugs, and blankets on display. The maze of vendors offers unique pieces. We were struck by the skill and artistry behind every textile. It wasn’t just about the aesthetics; each piece told a tale of tradition and pride. The patterns gave us a glimpse into the community it came from, with motifs often carrying deep cultural significance passed down through generations. We found ourselves drawn to a few pieces, not just for their beauty but for the stories they carried—an amazing glimpse into the living heritage of the Maya people.

Chichicastenango-Market-art

From textiles, we ventured into the pottery section, where the earthy smell of clay mixed with the sounds of busy market life. The pots were beautifully shaped and glazed. Hand-shaped pots, plates adorned with geometric patterns, and delicate figurines depicting local scenes caught our eyes. From there, my nose led us to the market’s culinary offerings. We sampled “atole”, a warm maize-based drink that was delicious and comforting, as well as “tamales” wrapped in banana leaves, which were my favorite. There are plenty of stalls to choose from, and the food is delicious and fairly priced.

One of the most poignant moments came when we stumbled upon the Church of Santo Tomás, an ancient sanctuary located within the market grounds. Originally built in the 16th century on top of a pre-Columbian temple platform, the church is a powerful symbol of the fusion between Catholicism and Maya religion. It’s common to see traditional K’iche’ Maya ceremonies taking place on its steps, complete with incense, candles, and flower offerings—a true testament to how ancient practices endure in modern-day Chichicastenango.

Throughout our visit, we were struck by the warmth and hospitality of the vendors and locals. Despite the language barrier, the smiles were warm, and everyone was very helpful.

Practical Tips for Visiting Chichicastenango Market:

  • Be prepared to haggle. Bargaining is expected and part of the fun—just keep it friendly and respectful.
  • Survival Spanish helps. Luckily, I had opted to take a Maximo Nivel Survival Spanish Online course before my trip, which made communication so much easier.
  • Ask before taking photos, especially of people or ceremonies. Many vendors appreciate the courtesy.
  • Arrive early for the liveliest experience and best selection.
  • Dress comfortably for walking through cobblestone streets and crowded stalls.
  • Don’t miss local foods like tamales, chuchitos, atol de elote, and grilled meats.
  • Take time to explore the town beyond the market—visit the cemetery with its vividly painted tombs or check out the nearby Pascual Abaj shrine for a deeper look at local spiritual life.
  • Let Maximo Nivel or their partners handle the logistics—trust me, it’s worth it to just relax and enjoy the moment.

Upon leaving the loud, vibrant Chichicastenango Market, we carried more than just souvenirs. We left with the biggest smiles, a satisfied food coma, and valuable memories. Visiting a place where history and tradition intertwine seamlessly was an honor. Our experience had been a testament to the resilience of the Maya culture and the enduring spirit of Guatemala’s highlands, a journey that left us enriched and inspired by the living heritage we had witnessed.

The Best Hands-On Online TEFL Certification Course https://maximonivel.com/best-hands-on-online-tefl/ Fri, 14 Mar 2025 21:10:25 +0000 https://maximonivel.com/?p=18893

Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) is a popular career choice, allowing individuals to teach English worldwide or online from home. However, not all TEFL certification programs are created equal. Many online TEFL courses focus purely on theory, often missing a key component: hands-on teaching practice. This is where Maximo Nivel’s Online TEFL program stands out.

Unlike standard online courses, Maximo Nivel’s TEFL program integrates a practical teaching module, providing real classroom experience. This hands-on approach helps trainees apply their knowledge in real-world settings, making them more confident and effective educators. Additionally, Maximo Nivel is a well-established onsite and online ESL school, with 3,500 learners studying English every month. This unique environment provides TEFL trainees with real ESL students to practice teaching, as well as the opportunity to observe experienced instructors who were once in their shoes.

Let’s explore how this practical component sets Maximo Nivel apart and why it’s a game-changer for aspiring ESL teachers.

experienced-tefl-trainers-teachers-online

The Problem with Traditional Online TEFL Courses

Most online TEFL programs rely heavily on automated lessons, pre-recorded lectures, and quizzes. While these build a strong theoretical foundation, they don’t fully prepare trainees for real-life classroom situations.

Without hands-on experience, TEFL graduates often struggle with lesson planning, classroom management, and engaging with students in real time. Employers recognize this gap, making it harder for online TEFL graduates to secure top teaching positions.

How Maximo Nivel’s Practical Training Fills the Gap

Maximo Nivel’s Online TEFL program ensures trainees receive both theoretical knowledge and real-world skills by incorporating practical teaching into the curriculum.

  1. Teach Real English Learners

Unlike other programs that rely on simulations, Maximo Nivel requires trainees to teach five hours of live classes with real English learners. With thousands of students learning English at Maximo Nivel every month, TEFL trainees have access to a diverse range of learners to practice with. This experience allows trainees to:

  • Practice lesson delivery in real time
  • Interact with students from diverse backgrounds
  • Develop classroom management skills

Teaching live classes builds confidence and adaptability, key traits of successful ESL teachers.

practical-teaching-online-tefl-maximo

  1. Personalized Coaching and Feedback

One major advantage of Maximo Nivel’s TEFL program is direct mentorship from expert TEFL trainers. Trainees receive:

  • 10 hours of one-on-one tutoring via Zoom
  • Detailed written and verbal feedback on their teaching
  • Ongoing support through the Learning Management System (LMS) and email

This personalized guidance ensures continuous improvement, helping trainees refining their teaching techniques and build confidence.

  1. Structured Lesson Plans and Teaching Materials

Many new teachers struggle with lesson planning. Maximo Nivel eliminates this challenge by providing:

  • Pre-designed lesson plans
  • Comprehensive teaching materials
  • Classroom management strategies
  • Assessment techniques

With a structured framework, trainees can focus on honing their teaching skills instead of worrying about lesson planning.

online-tefl-certification-with-live-training

  1. Observe Experienced ESL Teachers

In addition to hands-on teaching, Maximo Nivel’s program includes two classroom observations. Trainees watch experienced ESL teachers in action, gaining valuable insights into:

  • Effective lesson delivery
  • Student engagement strategies
  • Classroom management techniques

A unique advantage of Maximo Nivel is that many of its ESL teachers were once TEFL trainees in the same program. Seeing graduates of the same TEFL course successfully leading their own classes serves as both motivation and a learning opportunity for new trainees.

  1. Flexible Learning for Busy Schedules

Traditional in-person TEFL courses require significant time commitment. Many aspiring TEFL teachers are working professionals or full-time students who can’t take a month off for an intensive course.

Maximo Nivel’s online program offers flexibility without compromising quality. Because the practical teaching module is completed online, trainees gain real-world experience from anywhere. Using a Zoom account, they can teach live classes remotely, making it easier to balance training with other commitments.

Why Hands-On TEFL Training Matters

The hands-on experience provided by Maximo Nivel’s Online TEFL program offers several key benefits:

  • Better Job Prospects – Employers prefer candidates with real teaching experience. Maximo Nivel graduates have an advantage when applying for jobs.
  • Stronger Teaching Skills – Live teaching practice prepares trainees for real classroom situations, making them more effective educators.
  • Greater Confidence – Practicing under expert supervision builds the confidence needed for a successful TEFL career.
  • Letter of Recommendation – Graduates receive a letter of recommendation from their TEFL Trainer, boosting their job applications.

Why Choose Maximo Nivel’s Online TEFL Program?

Maximo Nivel’s Online TEFL program redefines online TEFL certification by combining flexibility with hands-on training. With live teaching experience, personalized coaching, structured lesson plans, and classroom observations, graduates are fully prepared to enter the ESL teaching field with confidence.

A Family Adventure: Volunteering Together in Cusco, Peru https://maximonivel.com/family-volunteer-peru/ Fri, 07 Mar 2025 18:43:10 +0000 https://maximonivel.com/?p=18882

It was a crisp morning in Cusco, Peru, as our family of four set out on a month-long journey with Maximo Nivel, ready to embark on an experience that would bring us closer—not just to each other, but to the community, culture, and animals of this beautiful country. Our adventure revolved around two volunteer projects: one dedicated to rescuing and caring for stray dogs and another focused on Peru’s beloved alpacas. We had no idea just how much this experience would shape us as individuals and as a family.

family-volunteer-peru

Bonding Over Barks and Wagging Tails

Our first two weeks were spent at the Dogs Program, an initiative that provides shelter, medical care, and adoption opportunities for abandoned and neglected dogs. From the moment we arrived, the energy was infectious—tails wagging, excited barks filling the air, and an undeniable sense of purpose.

For my 13-year-old daughter and 11-year-old son, it was love at first sight. They eagerly jumped into their daily tasks, from feeding and playing with the dogs to grooming and providing basic obedience training. Watching them take on responsibility with such enthusiasm was a proud moment as a parent.

family-volunteer-with-dogs-in-peru

One of the most memorable moments for us as a family was bath time. Imagine four of us, soaked head to toe, chasing playful dogs who had no interest in getting clean! Water splashed, fur flew, and laughter echoed through the shelter. It was in these chaotic, joy-filled moments that we truly saw the magic of volunteering as a family—it wasn’t just about helping animals; it was about working together, learning patience, and finding joy in giving back.

Through this experience, my children developed a deep sense of empathy and responsibility. They not only cared for the dogs but also understood the importance of initiatives like spay and neuter programs and adoption awareness. One day, when they inevitably ask for a dog back home, we know they’ll be ready for the responsibility—because they’ve already experienced what it truly means to care for an animal in need.

A New Rhythm at the Alpaca Farm

After our fulfilling time at the dog shelter, we transitioned to the Alpaca Project, nestled in the scenic village of Huayllarcocha, just outside of Cusco. The peaceful setting, with rolling hills and the towering Andes in the distance, set the stage for a different but equally enriching experience.

The alpaca farm was a place of serenity and hands-on learning. My husband and son, in particular, found a special connection with these gentle creatures, spending their days feeding them and keeping their pens clean. Although we didn’t get to work directly with alpaca wool, we had the unique opportunity to observe traditional weaving practices—an art passed down through generations. It was a chance to immerse ourselves in Peruvian culture beyond the tourist experience.

volunteer-with-llama-alpacas-family

For my daughter and me, mornings on the farm became our favorite part of the day. As we helped with chores, we’d pause to admire the breathtaking landscape and reflect on how special this time together was. Without the distractions of everyday life, we found ourselves more present, more engaged, and more appreciative of the simple joys of working side by side as a family.

Exploring Cusco and Beyond as a Family

Beyond our volunteer projects, Maximo Nivel provided us with opportunities to connect with the local community and engage in cultural activities. As a family, we took Spanish classes together, improving our language skills while interacting with locals. We participated in traditional Peruvian cooking classes, where we learned how to make delicious dishes like lomo saltado and causa rellena. Evenings were spent walking through Cusco’s vibrant streets, soaking in the history and atmosphere of this fascinating city.

cooking-classes-at-maximo-peru

On weekends, we took full advantage of our location in the heart of the Andes. Our biggest adventure was hiking to Machu Picchu, an experience that left us in awe. Seeing the ancient ruins in person, after trekking along trails surrounded by breathtaking scenery, was a moment we’ll never forget. Another highlight was our trip to Rainbow Mountain, where we marveled at the stunning natural colors of the landscape. The challenge of the hike brought us closer together, as we encouraged and supported each other every step of the way.

The Lasting Impact of Volunteering Together

As our month in Cusco came to an end, we reflected on how this journey had shaped us. We weren’t just tourists passing through; we had become part of something bigger. We had shared laughter while scrubbing muddy dogs, felt a sense of accomplishment after a long day of farm work, and, most importantly, strengthened our bond as a family through shared experiences.

traveling-and-volunteering-family-cusco

Volunteering with Maximo Nivel gave us more than just an opportunity to help—it provided us with a deeper understanding of compassion, teamwork, and cultural appreciation. As we left Cusco, we carried not only beautiful memories but also a newfound perspective on what it means to contribute as a family. This was more than just a trip; it was an adventure that will remain a part of us forever.

Embarking on a journey with Maximo Nivel was one of the best decisions of my life—a choice that not only enhanced my Spanish skills but also deepened my passion for animal welfare. As a Californian, I often felt like the odd one out for not speaking Spanish, especially in a state with such a rich Hispanic culture. I knew it was time to change that, and what better place to immerse myself in the language than in the heart of Central America?

Arriving in Antigua: A Warm Welcome

From the moment I stepped into Maximo Nivel’s institute in Antigua, Guatemala, I felt at home. The colonial-style campus, with its central garden and tranquil fountain, was a peaceful retreat in the middle of the bustling city. The welcoming staff made sure I had everything I needed, from arranging a homestay with a local family to placing me in the right Spanish class based on my level.

spanish-and-volunteering-gutemala

Traveling alone for the first time can be nerve-wracking, but the on-site support and 24/7 assistance at Maximo Nivel gave me the confidence to embrace the experience fully.

Spanish Immersion: Learning Beyond the Classroom

My Spanish classes quickly became the highlight of my day. Every morning, I was greeted by my native-speaking instructor, Sandra, whose passion for teaching made every lesson engaging. At Maximo Nivel, classes are small, which meant I received plenty of individual attention.

Spanish-Immersion-Guatemala-profe-Sandra

But the best part? The immersive learning experience. Beyond the classroom, I had endless opportunities to practice Spanish—chatting with my host family, bargaining at the local markets, and engaging with other travelers and locals. My confidence skyrocketed, and I can’t wait to test my skills with my best friend’s Spanish-speaking family when I return home!

Maximo Nivel also offers free conversation practice and cultural workshops, making it even easier to improve Spanish fluency while learning about Guatemalan customs and traditions.

Exploring Antigua: A City of Culture & History

Antigua itself is an incredible place to learn Spanish. The cobblestone streets, colorful colonial buildings, and stunning volcano views make it a dream destination for any traveler.

One of my favorite parts of the experience was exploring the vibrant local food scene. From pupusas and rellenitos to sizzling carne asada and hearty stews, every meal felt like a cultural lesson on its own.

What stood out the most, however, was the warmth of the Guatemalan people. I worried that my broken “gringo Spanish” would annoy them, but I was always met with patience and encouragement. They genuinely appreciated my effort to learn their language, which made me feel even more connected to the culture.

Volunteering at the Antigua Exotic Animal Rescue Center

While learning Spanish was a major part of my journey, my volunteer experience at an exotic animal rescue center in Antigua truly stole my heart. Nestled on the outskirts of town, the center is a sanctuary for injured, abandoned, and trafficked wildlife. Every day was an adventure—feeding animals, cleaning enclosures, and providing companionship to creatures both big and small. The playful antics of the capuchin monkeys always made me laugh, while the quiet curiosity of a white-nosed coati often had me smiling as it followed me around. At first, the boa constrictor frightened me, but as I learned more about it, I realized that with patience and respect, even the most intimidating creatures can be understood. The experience taught me valuable lessons about compassion, responsibility, and the importance of conservation efforts.

In fact, I’ve already signed up for Maximo Nivel’s online Spanish classes, so I can keep learning with the same teacher, Sandra, I had in Antigua. The journey isn’t over—it’s just beginning.

Survival Spanish Course Online: Your Essential Travel Toolkit https://maximonivel.com/survival-spanish-course-online/ Mon, 17 Feb 2025 12:40:02 +0000 https://maximonivel.com/?p=18842

When I signed up for my Gap Year program in Latin America, I was beyond excited to immerse myself in a new culture and contribute through volunteer work. But there was one thing that made me nervous—the language barrier. Spanish wasn’t a requirement for the program, but I knew that being able to communicate would make my experience more meaningful and enjoyable. That’s when I decided to take the Survival Spanish Course with Maximo Nivel before my trip. Looking back, it was the best decision I could have made. Here’s how learning Spanish online helped me navigate my journey with confidence.

Why I Chose Maximo Nivel’s Survival Spanish Course

I enrolled in Maximo Nivel’s Survival Spanish Course, a program designed to equip learners with practical Spanish skills for everyday situations. The focus was on essential vocabulary, pronunciation, and conversation, rather than complex grammar rules. The goal? To help students confidently order food, ask for directions, and handle real-life interactions in Spanish-speaking countries.

Since I hadn’t taken Spanish in high school, I knew I needed all the help I could get before embarking on my Gap Year adventure in Latin America. This course provided exactly what I needed—a solid foundation without feeling overwhelming.

A Crash Course in Confidence

What I loved about the course was its emphasis on conversation over theory. We didn’t dwell too much on grammar, which I could always revisit later. Instead, I focused on practical speaking skills that I could immediately use.

Before taking the course, something as simple as ordering food or asking for directions felt daunting. I probably wouldn’t have said much more than “Gracias”. But after learning with Maximo Nivel, I had the confidence to ask for what I needed without hesitation:

¿Dónde puedo comprar agua? (Where can I buy water?)
¿Cuánto cuesta esto? (How much does this cost?)

This newfound independence meant I wasn’t constantly pulling out my phone for translation apps or struggling with bad Wi-Fi. Instead, I was present in the moment, enjoying my experience without the stress of a language barrier.

Making a Real Impact in Gap Year

My volunteer placement during my Gap Year was at a school, where I interacted daily with students and teachers. Knowing basic Spanish transformed my experience. Instead of feeling like a foreigner trying to help, I became someone the kids could talk to, laugh with, and learn from.

Simple phrases like “¡Buen trabajo!” (Good job!) made a huge difference in building trust and rapport. I could explain activities, give instructions, and encourage students in a way that felt natural. Without the Survival Spanish course, I would have struggled to connect with the people I was there to support.

Feeling Safe & Self-Reliant

Being in a new country comes with unfamiliar situations, but knowing Spanish made me feel safer. One evening, I got lost on my way back from the market. Instead of panicking, I approached a local and confidently asked:

“Perdón, ¿puedes ayudarme? Estoy buscando esta dirección.”
(Excuse me, can you help me? I’m looking for this address.)

They kindly pointed me in the right direction, and I got home safely.

Beyond that, understanding signs, announcements, and casual warnings from locals helped me navigate my surroundings with ease. I even picked up a few bargaining skills at the market, using phrases like:

“¿Me puedes dar un mejor precio?” (Can you give me a better price?)

It turns out, a little Spanish can go a long way in helping you save money, stay safe, and feel at home in a new country.

The Best Investment for My Trip

Enrolling in Maximo Nivel’s online Spanish program was one of the most affordable and valuable choices I made. Instead of spending my trip glued to a translation app or relying on English speakers, I had the skills to communicate naturally.

The flexibility of the online program was also a game-changer. I could fit lessons into my schedule easily, and my instructor, Ana, was incredibly patient and supportive. Seeing my progress week after week was so rewarding.

Should You Take the Survival Spanish Course?

If you’re planning to volunteer, travel, or even just improve your Spanish, I can’t recommend Maximo Nivel’s online classes enough. Their focus on real-world skills, cultural knowledge, and personalized instruction made my trip smoother, safer, and far more fulfilling.

Whether you’re a complete beginner or just need a refresher, this course will set you up for success. Learning Spanish before my trip turned what could have been an intimidating challenge into an enriching adventure. It allowed me to:

  • Connect with locals
  • Contribute more effectively
  • Immerse myself in Latin American culture

So, before you book your flight, sign up for Maximo Nivel’s online Spanish classes—it’s an investment in yourself and your journey!

Volunteering and Learning Spanish in Peru: A Couple’s Story https://maximonivel.com/volunteering-learning-spanish-peru/ Mon, 16 Dec 2024 14:58:14 +0000 https://maximonivel.com/?p=18776

I’ve just returned from an incredible journey that I’m so excited to share with you. Over the past four weeks, my boyfriend and I have been in Peru, volunteering with Maximo Nivel, immersing ourselves in the culture, learning Spanish, and giving back to the community. It’s been an experience like no other, and I’m bursting with stories to tell.

Why We Chose Peru

The decision to volunteer in Peru wasn’t just about adventure—it was deeply personal. My boyfriend’s native language is Spanish, and while his English is flawless, I’ve always felt a bit of a gap because I couldn’t fully communicate with him in his first language. So when the opportunity arose to combine learning Spanish with volunteering in Peru, I knew it was perfect. It wasn’t just about learning a language—it was about connecting more deeply with my partner and his culture while making a meaningful contribution to the lives of others.

Volunteering in Cusco

Our volunteer program focused on working with children in Cusco, a city rich in history and culture but also facing significant challenges. Many families in Peru struggle with poverty and lack of resources, creating tough conditions for kids to thrive. Maximo Nivel’s efforts to support these children rely heavily on volunteers, and it was an honor to be part of their mission.

From the moment we arrived in Cusco, the team at Maximo Nivel made us feel at home. They guided us through settling into the city—a task that’s far more daunting when you’re staying long-term rather than just as a tourist. My boyfriend, having grown up near the coast of Peru before moving to the U.S. at 14, wasn’t familiar with Cusco either, so we leaned heavily on Maximo Nivel’s support. Their help in navigating everything from accommodations to local customs made all the difference.

The work itself was incredibly fulfilling. Whether we were helping with homework, playing games, or simply being there to listen, every moment felt meaningful. The kids were so sweet and full of life despite the challenges they faced. They even became my unofficial Spanish tutors, helping me learn in the most organic and heartwarming way. My boyfriend’s pride in seeing me embrace his culture added another layer of joy to the experience. A word of advice for future volunteers: brush up on your volleyball and soccer skills before you go. I definitely looked like a newbie, but the kids’ patience and enthusiasm made it all fun.

Learning Spanish Together

For me, learning Spanish was a major goal of this trip. While my boyfriend didn’t need classes, I threw myself into the lessons offered by Maximo Nivel. The teachers were native speakers and incredibly skilled at making the learning process engaging and effective. They even taught me some Peruvian slang, which earned me plenty of laughs and appreciation from my boyfriend. Seeing his surprised smile when I used phrases, he never expected me to know was a highlight of the trip. By the end of our stay, I was confidently chatting with locals and beginning to feel at ease in Spanish.

Exploring Peru

Beyond volunteering and classes, we took every opportunity to explore the beauty of Peru. Cusco itself is a treasure trove of history and charm. We wandered through the artistic neighborhood of San Blas, explored ancient ruins within walking distance of the city, and indulged in mouthwatering Peruvian dishes like Aji de Gallina, trout ceviche, and lomo saltado.

Before and after our program, we ventured further afield. The towering Andes around Cusco, the lush Amazon jungle in Madre de Dios, and the breathtaking Pacific coastline near Lima all felt like scenes from a dream. Every new destination deepened our appreciation for the country’s incredible diversity and beauty.

What We Gained

As we prepare to head home, I’m overwhelmed with gratitude for this journey. Volunteering in Peru not only gave me a deeper understanding of its culture and the challenges its people face but also strengthened my relationship in ways I never imagined. My boyfriend and I have grown closer through this shared experience, and I’m excited to return home with a new level of connection. Instead of just nodding and smiling during conversations with his friends, I’ll be joking and chatting right along with them.

This experience has also ignited a passion for volunteering and making a difference. Peru will always hold a special place in my heart, and I can’t wait to carry the lessons and memories from this incredible adventure into the next chapter of my life. If you’ve ever thought about volunteering abroad, especially as a couple, I can’t recommend it enough. It’s a journey of growth, discovery, and connection that you’ll treasure forever.

Getting My Hands Dirty – Construction Volunteer in Guatemala https://maximonivel.com/volunteering-construction-guatemala/ Mon, 09 Dec 2024 12:31:07 +0000 https://maximonivel.com/?p=18643

As a college student from Washington State, I decided to spend my summer pushing myself out of my comfort zone. Instead of relaxing at home or doing what most students might, I chose to volunteer in Guatemala with Maximo Nivel, working on a construction project for the entire month of July. I had no background in construction and didn’t speak much Spanish, but that was part of the appeal—this was a chance to challenge myself, learn new skills, and contribute meaningfully to a community in need.

I had seen friends sharing photos from their volunteer experiences abroad, and I was always drawn to the idea of doing something similar. It wasn’t just about helping others—it was also about immersing myself in a new culture and growing as a person. This journey was about more than just experiencing a volunteer opportunity. I wanted to gain a deeper understanding of life in another part of the world, foster cultural connections, and make a lasting impact. What I didn’t expect was how transformative the experience would be. Over those four weeks, I gained practical skills, formed lifelong friendships, and grew in ways I hadn’t imagined.

construction-volunteer-guatemala

From the moment I landed in Guatemala, I felt supported. I was greeted at the airport by a Maximo Nivel driver holding their signature yellow smiley flag, ready to take me to Antigua. Since my flight arrived early in the day, I was immediately taken to the Maximo Nivel campus in the heart of Antigua. It was a beautiful space where I received a warm welcome and attended an orientation. There, I met other volunteers and students starting their programs that same week.

After orientation, I was introduced to Fredy, the local construction foreman. Fredy’s patience, expertise, and calm demeanor made him the perfect mentor for first-time volunteers like me. He had a unique ability to teach construction techniques clearly, ensuring that even complete beginners felt confident and capable. Tasks that initially seemed intimidating quickly became manageable—and even enjoyable—with Fredy’s guidance.

learning-from-the-construction-foreman

My construction duties focused on improving the facilities at a local exotic animal shelter, the main organization in Guatemala that rescues and rehabilitates exotic animals. Their critical work had outgrown their existing space, and they desperately needed new enclosures to care for the animals they rescue every week.

During the first week, I worked on fixing and rebuilding cement floors in some of the enclosures being constructed. Mixing and laying cement was something I had never done before, but with Fredy’s help, I quickly learned the process. By the end of the week, I felt like I could confidently tackle any cement project back home—my family better watch out the next time they need a patio fixed!

The following weeks brought even more challenges and opportunities to learn. I helped build new enclosures for the rescued animals, working with wood and learning basic welding techniques. Handling tools and materials was initially intimidating, but Fredy’s patient teaching made it easy to grasp the skills. Seeing the new enclosures take shape and knowing they would provide a safer, more comfortable environment for the animals was incredibly rewarding.

construction-work-finished

Although I couldn’t stay long enough to see the entire project completed, it was fulfilling to know that some of the enclosures were already in use before I left. If I could, I would have stayed longer to see the entire expansion project through to completion.

One of the most inspiring parts of the experience was meeting the other volunteers. It was incredible to see people of all ages and backgrounds dedicating their summer holidays to making a difference. I was particularly moved by the families volunteering together—it showed me that giving back is something anyone can do, regardless of their stage in life. Seeing parents and children working side by side and sharing this meaningful experience was a powerful reminder of how impactful even a few weeks can be.

At the Maximo Nivel campus, I also connected with local and international students participating in various projects. The campus was buzzing with energy, and daily activities like soccer nights, dance classes, cooking lessons, and tandem language exchanges created a unique intercultural experience. These events weren’t just fun; they allowed me to forge meaningful relationships with people from around the world who shared similar goals of learning and giving back.

meeting-inspiring-people

Maximo Nivel didn’t just provide a meaningful volunteer experience—they also made sure we had opportunities to immerse ourselves in Guatemalan culture. From exploring vibrant local markets to participating in traditional activities, every day offered something new to discover. Sharing meals with fellow volunteers allowed us to exchange stories and perspectives, adding even more depth to the experience.

Before this trip, I had hesitated to travel to a foreign country. The farthest I’d been from home was Canada during a high school family vacation. But with Maximo Nivel’s support, I felt prepared, safe, and confident throughout my stay.

new-friends-and-connections

If I were to do it again, I’d prepare by taking online Spanish classes with Maximo Nivel before heading out. Learning more of the language beforehand would make it easier to communicate with locals and deepen my connections with the community and the experience overall.

My time in Guatemala was about more than fixing floors and building enclosures; it was about building connections, challenging preconceptions, and discovering the power of teamwork. With the Maximo Nivel team’s guidance and Fredy’s patient teaching, I went from a complete novice to someone capable of contributing meaningfully to a construction project—and to a community in need.

If you’re considering volunteering abroad but feel unsure, I can’t recommend it enough. The lessons I learned, the people I met, and the experiences I had will stay with me for a lifetime. And who knows? Maybe next summer, I’ll be back in Guatemala, helping improve one of the clinics or schools Maximo Nivel partners with—and speaking a little more Spanish.
