What could be more dreamy than a trip to the clouds? A mountainous terrain and biological reserve nestled within a cloud forest might do the trick! Costa Rica’s Monteverde Cloud Forest, just a few hours drive from the Maximo Nivel campus in San Jose, is a dream destination for nature enthusiasts and adventurers alike where you can connect with nature and participate in the conservation of the cloud forest ecosystem. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve is run by a non-government environmental organization that has established research, sustainability initiatives, ecotourism, and conservation practices for over 60 years.

So, what is a cloud forest? In a basic sense, cloud forests are characterized by a moist, tropical or subtropical forest with low-level, persistent cloud cover. An abundance of moss makes up most of the surface vegetation while the trees tend to be short and thick with small leaves. Annual rainfall ranges from 20 – 393 inches/year (500 – 10,000 mm/year) with temperatures ranging from 45 – 68 ℉ (8 – 20 ℃). Cloud forests are known to be one of the most biodiverse ecosystems in the world! With little sunlight, seemingly endless fog, and high moisture content, cloud forests have an unforgettable, fairytale-like nature.

Costa Rica’s Monteverde Cloud Forest rises to an elevation of 5000 ft (1500 m) in the northern mountain range of Tilarán. Monteverde has 3 distinct seasons – rainy season lasts from May to November with morning sunshine and afternoon and evening rain showers; the transitional windy-misty season occurs between November to January; dry season begins in January and ends in April with gentle winds and little cloud formation. Monteverde is home to hundreds of species of mammals, birds, and reptiles and has more than 3200 species of plants. 10193 acres (4125 hectares) of forest is protected against poaching and deforestation.

Monteverde offers you several opportunities to observe, learn, and interact with the natural environment. With 425 species of birds living in the reserve, Monteverde’s birdwatching tour is a must do for bird-lovers! While birdwatching, you might see resident birds or migratory birds just passing through. If interaction is what you’re looking for, a walking tour gets you up close to nature. Remember to be respectful of the flora and fauna – your tour guide will give you best practices for respecting the environment. To get a closer look at the plants and animals living in the reserve, you might consider a natural history walking tour to learn about the biodiversity of the forest or even a night tour to observe what creatures rule the land after the sun goes down. If you’re looking for a true learning experience, an educational tour takes you on trails specifically used for scientific studies and research!
