It was a crisp morning in Cusco, Peru, as our family of four set out on a month-long journey with Maximo Nivel, ready to embark on an experience that would bring us closer—not just to each other, but to the community, culture, and animals of this beautiful country. Our adventure revolved around two volunteer projects: one dedicated to rescuing and caring for stray dogs and another focused on Peru’s beloved alpacas. We had no idea just how much this experience would shape us as individuals and as a family.
Bonding Over Barks and Wagging Tails
Our first two weeks were spent at the Dogs Program, an initiative that provides shelter, medical care, and adoption opportunities for abandoned and neglected dogs. From the moment we arrived, the energy was infectious—tails wagging, excited barks filling the air, and an undeniable sense of purpose.
For my 13-year-old daughter and 11-year-old son, it was love at first sight. They eagerly jumped into their daily tasks, from feeding and playing with the dogs to grooming and providing basic obedience training. Watching them take on responsibility with such enthusiasm was a proud moment as a parent.
One of the most memorable moments for us as a family was bath time. Imagine four of us, soaked head to toe, chasing playful dogs who had no interest in getting clean! Water splashed, fur flew, and laughter echoed through the shelter. It was in these chaotic, joy-filled moments that we truly saw the magic of volunteering as a family—it wasn’t just about helping animals; it was about working together, learning patience, and finding joy in giving back.
Through this experience, my children developed a deep sense of empathy and responsibility. They not only cared for the dogs but also understood the importance of initiatives like spay and neuter programs and adoption awareness. One day, when they inevitably ask for a dog back home, we know they’ll be ready for the responsibility—because they’ve already experienced what it truly means to care for an animal in need.
A New Rhythm at the Alpaca Farm
After our fulfilling time at the dog shelter, we transitioned to the Alpaca Project, nestled in the scenic village of Huayllarcocha, just outside of Cusco. The peaceful setting, with rolling hills and the towering Andes in the distance, set the stage for a different but equally enriching experience.
The alpaca farm was a place of serenity and hands-on learning. My husband and son, in particular, found a special connection with these gentle creatures, spending their days feeding them and keeping their pens clean. Although we didn’t get to work directly with alpaca wool, we had the unique opportunity to observe traditional weaving practices—an art passed down through generations. It was a chance to immerse ourselves in Peruvian culture beyond the tourist experience.
For my daughter and me, mornings on the farm became our favorite part of the day. As we helped with chores, we’d pause to admire the breathtaking landscape and reflect on how special this time together was. Without the distractions of everyday life, we found ourselves more present, more engaged, and more appreciative of the simple joys of working side by side as a family.
Exploring Cusco and Beyond as a Family
Beyond our volunteer projects, Maximo Nivel provided us with opportunities to connect with the local community and engage in cultural activities. As a family, we took Spanish classes together, improving our language skills while interacting with locals. We participated in traditional Peruvian cooking classes, where we learned how to make delicious dishes like lomo saltado and causa rellena. Evenings were spent walking through Cusco’s vibrant streets, soaking in the history and atmosphere of this fascinating city.
On weekends, we took full advantage of our location in the heart of the Andes. Our biggest adventure was hiking to Machu Picchu, an experience that left us in awe. Seeing the ancient ruins in person, after trekking along trails surrounded by breathtaking scenery, was a moment we’ll never forget. Another highlight was our trip to Rainbow Mountain, where we marveled at the stunning natural colors of the landscape. The challenge of the hike brought us closer together, as we encouraged and supported each other every step of the way.
The Lasting Impact of Volunteering Together
As our month in Cusco came to an end, we reflected on how this journey had shaped us. We weren’t just tourists passing through; we had become part of something bigger. We had shared laughter while scrubbing muddy dogs, felt a sense of accomplishment after a long day of farm work, and, most importantly, strengthened our bond as a family through shared experiences.
Volunteering with Maximo Nivel gave us more than just an opportunity to help—it provided us with a deeper understanding of compassion, teamwork, and cultural appreciation. As we left Cusco, we carried not only beautiful memories but also a newfound perspective on what it means to contribute as a family. This was more than just a trip; it was an adventure that will remain a part of us forever.
