Gap Year programs at Maximo Nivel can be customized to create the exact gap year you are looking for. You can pick and choose from a number of programs and combine them into a Gap Program that lasts a couple of months, half-a-year, or a full year. Wherever you want to go and whatever you want to do, we are already here in-country ready to help you!

Gap year programs bring together college-age students from all over the world. Gap years are transformative experiences and students are enriched through meaningful travel, language training, and community service. Ambitious gap year participants can earn academic credit and learn career skills as well.

– At least 17 years of age
– Able to be creative with limited resources
– Hard working, ready to do anything!
– Positive mindset
– Background check is required for all gap year participants working with children

Daily Schedule
– 2-4 hours/day Spanish classes
– 3-4 hours/day of community service
– Community service hours are morning or afternoon depending on project
– Community service projects may be walking distance or require public transportation

Gap year programs combine travel, Spanish, community service, and skill building courses. You have weekends free, and a 2-week break to organize extra treks, tours, and beach time. All gap year participants receive the following services as part of the program:

– Airport pick-up
– Safety orientation and walking tour
– Host family accommodations (private room)
– Breakfast and dinner, 7 days/week
– 3 to 4 hours/day community service
– 2 hours/day Spanish language classes
– Other certification courses depending on program
– Official program certificates
– Tandem Conversation Program
– Free WiFi and computer lab

Spanish Language Classes

Maximo Nivel has the best-rated Spanish schools in Latin America. Spanish Immersion courses provide an authentic in-country experience and really move your Spanish skills up to an appropriate level for academics or work. During your gap year, you study with a certified, native Spanish teacher and really gain fluency by living and studying in a Spanish-speaking country.

Community Service

The Volunteer Abroad program is an excellent way to gain international work experience and learn more about community service and helping others. You can get involved in all kinds of projects depending on your interests and the impact you want to help create.

Surf School

Learn to surf during your gap year! Surf school is a great program for both beginners and more advanced surfers. Your surf classes are led by a professional, bilingual surf instructor. Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Peru are world class surfing destinations—so these are great places to check out the waves!

Scuba Diving Certification

Learn to scuba dive and get certified as part of your gap year experience. All scuba courses offer PADI certifications taught by knowledgeable, experienced PADI instructors. PADI diving credentials are the most respected in the world and are recognized everywhere. Scuba diving opens a whole new world of travel.

TEFL Certification

You can build career skills during your gap year by earning a TEFL certification (Teaching English as a Second Language). A TEFL certificate is your first step to working abroad as a professional English teacher. Teaching English abroad is an excellent opportunity to travel, work, and get paid for it.

Adventure & Culture

Mini Adventures are an excellent way to make your gap year even more meaningful! These week long itineraries that take you to the best places to see in Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Peru. You visit all the most important sites and we do all the work set-up for you.

University Courses

You can earn credit towards your degree during your gap year program. Maximo Nivel offers a wide ranage of university courses including general education courses (100 and 200 level) as well as specialized content courses (300 and 400 level). Short-term and semester-long university courses are available during Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer terms.
