EDUCATION
INTERNSHIPS
IN LATIN AMERICA
Working in an international setting provides you with new classroom perspective and helps you grow as a professional educator. Education internship placements are usually in English-speaking classrooms at private or public schools. As an education intern, you may choose from early childhood, elementary, middle school, and high school placements. Note that ESL-specific internships are also available.
Education interns work alongside a professional teacher, assist with instruction and classroom management, and directly plan and teach lessons. While teaching, you are observed and receive feedback to help hone your skills as a new teacher. As you work through your internship placement, you come to understand school curricula and standards, family and community challenges, and methodologies for measuring students’ educational development. You gain practical experience in assessing student needs, leading educational activities, and you learn more about teaching techniques and classroom leadership.

Why I Maximo Nivel
I had the privilege of working in an Elementary School, during my time in Costa Rica. I helped in a few first grade and sixth grade classrooms. I was able to teach English to the students, while simultaneously furthering my Spanish skills. The students and staff members were so welcoming, and I’m so grateful for the experience. This internship was extremely beneficial and I know that the skills I gained will benefit me in my future career.

EDUCATION INTERNSHIPS
IN COSTA RICA
Since 1948, Costa Rica has eliminated its military and instead has focused on education, healthcare, and the environment. Costa Rica has a 98% literacy rate and is one of the most academically advanced countries in Latin America. International interns are placed in private bilingual or public schools.
Private schools follow the International Baccalaureate (“IB”) curriculum or an adjusted North American curriculum. Public schools carefully follow the government-mandated curriculum in Costa Rica. In both private and public schools, the classes you assist with are taught in English, and you directly report to a designated faculty member at your school placement. Your international internship in Costa Rica provides you with the experience needed to hone your teaching skills, learn more about lesson planning, and implement classroom management strategies, all in one of the most beautiful and biodiverse countries in the world.
EDUCATION INTERNSHIPS
IN GUATEMALA
Guatemala has made many improvements to their education system over the last 20 years. Today, almost 100% of the population is enrolled in school, compared to just 39% in the early 1990’s. However almost one-third of Guatemalan students fail primary school, making education and academic development a top priority for the entire country.
International interns are placed exclusively in private bilingual schools, some of which follow the International Baccalaureate (“IB”) curriculum and others that follow the government-mandated curriculum. The classes you assist with are taught in English and you report directly to a designated faculty member at your school placement. Interns work closely with students to help them with their academics, while developing lesson plans, teaching classes, and assisting the lead teacher. The experience you gain from an internships in Guatemala is life-changing and gives you a whole new perspective as a teacher!

EDUCATION INTERNSHIPS
IN PERU
Since 1990, Peru has significantly increased its spending on education and has extended free education to all students between the ages of 5 and 16. Today, the country’s literacy rate is 90%, compared to only 40% in 1940. Despite some success, Peru’s public education system struggles to provide services to the most rural and impoverished areas of the country.
The private education sector has developed rapidly and is a very important part of the overall education system as it helps to fill voids in public education. International interns are placed in private bilingual schools, some of which follow the International Baccalaureate (“IB”) curriculum. The classes you assist are taught in English and you directly report to a designated faculty member at your school placement. Interns actively work alongside students and teachers, create lesson plans, and implement classroom management strategies on a daily basis.
