HUMAN RIGHTS
INTERNSHIPS
IN LATIN AMERICA
In Latin America, poverty and discrimination create uneven access to resources and degrade basic human rights, but positive change happens through community development focused on social justice and human empowerment. International internship placements are typically with community organizations, NGOs, and government agencies. Interns work with change agents and other social workers who are focused on development, equality and justice, and social responsibility. You help with community outreach, education, research, and fund-raising. As an international intern, you immerse yourself into a community and a project and you learn first-hand about the impacts of culture, social values, and the roles of politics, religion, gender, and ethnicity.

Why I Maximo Nivel
I chose to intern in Costa Rica for 8 weeks during my summer break, and the experience was incredibly worth the cost. I was placed at a small micro-credit lending organization that makes loans to low-income women all over the country. I cannot emphasize enough how welcoming and helpful my coworkers were. From day one they made me feel like an important part of their team and allowed me to take part in their projects and day-to-day business. It was truly a worthwhile learning experience that boosted my resume in a big way.

HUMAN RIGHTS INTERNSHIPS
IN COSTA RICA
Costa Rica continues to lead Latin America in politics, healthcare, education, and environmental protection. However, like many countries in the region, major improvements are still urgently needed. According to Costa Rica’s 2018 Human Rights Report, the most urgent areas of need include women’s rights, undocumented immigrants, discrimination against refugees, and inclusion of the LGBTQ+ community.
Based on your interests your international internship places you in community organizations, NGOs, and government agencies. You intern next to professional social workers and local champions for development, empowerment, and social justice. International interns help with community outreach, education, research, and fund-raising. As an intern, you immerse yourself into a Costa Rican community with a project, where you learn first-hand about the impacts of culture, values, politics, religion, gender, and ethnicity.
HUMAN RIGHTS INTERNSHIPS
IN GUATEMALA
Guatemala continues to lag most countries in gender equality, education, and indigenous rights. Guatemala suffers from widespread corruption, poor utilization of resources, and violence against women. Indigenous groups also remain largely outside of the political, economic, social, and cultural mainstream, even though they account for 44% of the country’s population.
Based on your interests, international internship placements are with community organizations, NGOs, indigenous groups, and government agencies. Interns advocate for human rights in Guatemala and help provide a voice for those facing severe disadvantages. By working with change agents, community organizers, and other social workers, you help with community outreach, education, research, and fund-raising. Every little step adds to the development of a path to individual independence and equality. Every Human Rights internship provides a closeup view to a very unique culture and the opportunity to make positive community impact.

HUMAN RIGHTS INTERNSHIPS
IN PERU
Human rights are an integral part of the social and political development of Peru. Still, the country faces many challenges such as violence and discrimination against women, children, individuals with disabilities, LGBTQ+, and indigenous people. Peru’s rural populations also have very unequal access to education and healthcare.
International interns working in human rights advocate for Peruvian people whose voices often go unheard. Based on your interests, you are placed with community organizations, NGOs, indigenous groups, and government agencies. You gain experience working with community outreach, education, research, and fund-raising for social issues that you are especially passionate about. Your international internship directly impacts local communities, where you can learn about the real people of Peru and help to align the stepping stones for a better tomorrow.
