Why I Maximo Nivel
It was a humbling experience helping out with patients’ oral care and having limited resources compared to what we have in the United States. I loved the experience of working with local dentists that have limited tools to work with but still deliver great dental care with passion.
WHAT WILL YOU DO
AS A DENTAL VOLUNTEER
Maximo Nivel’s dentistry projects serve health centers and dental offices in low-income communities that are striving to make dental care more accessible. International volunteers work alongside local professionals in private and government-run settings.
Responsibilities vary depending on the volunteer’s background and Spanish skills in addition to the project’s needs. Volunteers assist dentists and dental hygienists during consultations, cleanings, and treatments. You’ll prepare materials, sanitize instruments and manage patient care. You may also oversee administrative tasks or educate community members about dental hygiene. It is important you’ll be flexible and responsive to the needs of your project and the community.
DENTAL PROGRAMS IN COSTA RICA
Even though Costa Rica has one of the most developed healthcare systems in Latin America, there is still a large disparity between the treatment patients need and the care they actually receive. This is especially true in the dental field. As an international volunteer, you’ll be a tremendous asset to local dental professionals who are forced to work with limited resources, funding, and support staff. Help underserved communities become more educated about dental hygiene and get the medical attention they deserve.
DENTAL PROGRAMS IN GUATEMALA
There isn’t much overlap between dentistry and the general healthcare system in Guatemala. The nationalized healthcare system is already struggling to serve the country’s population equitably for basic healthcare, let alone dental and oral health. In addition to the shortage of funding and properly trained staff, the lack of education surrounding dental hygiene makes it difficult to identify and treat community members in need of medical attention. Guatemalan dental clinics need volunteers like you to raise awareness in their communities and assist with patient care. Help give locals the attention, treatment and education they’re missing.
DENTAL PROGRAMS IN PERU
Providing equal access to healthcare is particularly difficult in the rural provinces of Peru. Many medical centers in Peru’s low-income and remote communities lack resources and professionally trained staff. Given the logistical and financial obstacles Peruvian medical professionals face, dental care is usually very low on the priority list. However, poor dental and oral health affects the entire body! As an international volunteer, you can make a real difference in the day-to-day lives of dentists, dental hygienists, orthodontists, and their patients by lending a helping hand. If you care about advocating for accessible healthcare, Peru is an excellent place to start.
